Immune factors in corneal graft rejection.
نویسنده
چکیده
This panorama of the immune factors in corneal graft rejection covers a spectrum of mechanisms which play a role in the opacification of corneal grafts. Great emphasis has been accorded to the role of transplantation immunity. The clinical and experimental evidence implicating transplantation immunity in the rejection of corneal grafts has been critically reviewed. In addition, evidence is presented indicating that some immune mechanisms which result in inflammatory sequelas other than classical transplantation immunity can lead to rejection of corneal grafts. Evidence also suggests that certain well-described pseudoimmune or immunomimetic reactions, which are devoid of the classic criteria required for hypersensitivity reactions, contribute to rejection of corneal grafts.

Abstract Background: Although corneal graft may be rejected by the immune system of the recipient it remains as the most successful operation as compared to transplantation of other tissues. Since most patient do not reject the grafts, those who do are in the minority. This study was carried out to assess the usefulness of the cure frailty model for determining the significance of risk facto...
متن کاملRisk Factors for Failure of Keratoplasty in Keratoconus: Penetrating vs. Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty
Purpose: To determine the etiologic factors on rejection and failure rates and ocular surface changes after corneal transplantation by either DALK or PKP, in cases of keratoconus (KCN). Methods: In this cross-sectional study, considering the existing data, patients with keratoconus referring to Labbafinejad Medical Center from 2006 to 2016, who underwent corneal transplantation, were enrolled a...
متن کاملCorrelation of Corneal Allograft Rejection with Tumor Necrosis Factors-Alpha Gene Polymorphism
Background: Correlations between bone marrow, heart, kidney, liver, skin and lung transplant rejection or survival with human cytokine gene polymorphisms have been described. There are also reports about the role of cytokines and Tumor Necrosis Factors-Alpha (TNF-α) on corneal transplant in animal models. Further studies are needed to clarify the role of cytokines in corneal allograft rejection...
متن کاملEffect of Fas -670 A/G Gene Polymorphism on Corneal Allograft Endothelial Rejection
Background: Human cornea expresses functional Fas-ligand capable of killing Fas+ activated lymphocytes. Fas expression is partly regulated by -670 A/G polymorphism in the promoter region of Fas gene. Objective: The aim of the present study is to determine the association between Fas-670A/G polymorphism and survival of corneal transplantation. Methods: In 276 graft recipients who mainly underwen...
متن کاملCorneal Allograft Rejection: Immunopathogenesis to Therapeutics
Corneal transplantation is among the most successful solid organ transplants. However, despite low rejection rates of grafts in the 'low-risk' setting, rejection can be as high as 70% when grafted into 'high-risk' recipient beds. Under normal homeostatic conditions, the avascular cornea provides a unique environment that facilitates immune and angiogenic privilege. An imbalance in pro-inflammat...
